We hold our suffering closely, like a stone carried in the pocket, its edges slowly polished smooth by the friction of our silence.

This profound inwardness inevitably shaped me. Even as I later found language — in writing, within diaspora communities, through political analysis — I held onto solitude as my first, my native tongue.

And I’ve come to understand: solitude is not weakness. It is often the beginning of clarity. It became that quiet homeland — the necessary internal territory where I could finally find the room to write these words. To remember my history not just through recited facts, but through the resonance of feeling. To make a tentative peace with the parts of myself that feel fractured, hybrid, perpetually undefined.

In this fractured world — where noise is mistaken for importance, where presence is measured in clicks and metrics — the capacity for solitude feels quietly subversive. And, in its own way, deeply Vietnamese.

Not because we prefer to be alone,

I was not born there, or perhaps I left too young to recall the texture of its streets underfoot. But still, I carry it. Not in clear, sun-drenched images, but in resonant fragments: the music of my name spoken in Vietnamese syllables found nowhere else; the comfort of rice scooped from a shared family pot; the particular weight of silence settling between older generations at the table. Sometimes, the sharp scent of city rain on pavement brings a jarring, phantom whiff of woodsmoke clinging to fabrics stored only in memory.

Vietnam lives in me like an echo.

When people ask me where I’m really from, I often hesitate. If I name Vietnam, their eyes flicker with curiosity — or sometimes, a blank confusion. If I name the country I inhabit now, it feels like tearing a page out, leaving something vital unsaid. My Vietnamese is halting on my tongue, the accent inevitably warped by distance and disuse. I write about ‘home’ like an observant historian, not an effortless native.

And yet — I know, instinctively, that fish sauce should never meet the cold of a refrigerator.
I know the specific, melancholy ache of listening to Trịnh Công Sơn on a grey, rainy afternoon.
I know that the English language offers no true vessel for the nuanced weight of “duyên”, or the profound duty of “hiếu.”

I live in the hyphen, in the space between. A child of the diaspora, perhaps — or simply of a gentle, continuous dislocation.

This space between cultures is sometimes a gift — a kind of double vision, letting me see both the restless impatience in a Western queue and the unspoken histories carried in an elder’s slow, deliberate steps. But just as often, it’s a disorienting landscape, a constant low hum of dissonance beneath the surface. I’ve been told I am too Vietnamese. And in the next breath, not Vietnamese enough. Too Westernized — and fundamentally, not Western at all.

These voices argue outside, trying to measure and define. But inside… the country I carry between my ribs doesn’t require their permission to exist. It breathes quietly there. It shows up in my writing’s cadence, embeds itself in my values, prompts the slight, unconscious bow I offer elders — even far from any ancestral shore. It fuels the particular stories I find myself chasing, lives in the taut line stretched between embracing modernity and honoring remembrance. It is the source of that recurring need to explain, translate, justify — and, sometimes, the quiet rebellion of simply choosing not to.

To be Vietnamese in this liminal space is to be perpetually rebuilding a homeland from shards of memory, inherited gestures, resonant melodies, and flavors that trigger phantom belonging. It is to accept the mosaic nature of the self — and finally, perhaps, to realize that these gathered pieces, vibrant and real within you, are more than enough.

Not from unwillingness, perhaps, but because the story itself had become a burden — too heavy, too tangled with ghosts, or maybe too sacred to unfold completely. I learned young that certain questions made faces tighten, made gazes slide away. Some names remained unspoken, settling like dust motes in the quiet air. The silence wasn’t absence; it was memory wrapped in gauze; the faint outline of the wound sometimes visible beneath the careful folds.

When I asked my grandmother about the years before, her reply was a sigh, condensed — “It was hard.”

But step outside those walls — into the glare of school, the clamor of the market, the vastness abroad — and a different demand echo back: ambition is oxygen. The urgent need to rise, to become something bigger, sharper, richer, louder.

We’ve built gleaming cities on that hunger. We’ve propelled our children through relentless international exams and across borders. We’ve vaulted from bicycles to luxury cars in the span of a single generation. And yet — beneath the shine, something still feels thin. Brittle. Like stretched paper about to tear.

This ambition isn’t entirely foreign. Drive runs deep in our veins. But sometimes, its modern dialect feels borrowed. It speaks fluent English, rattles off global tech jargon. It moves at breakneck speed, impatient, almost desperate — as if trying to outrun the long shadow of our history. And perhaps it is.

I’ve seen the cost etched in worried lines:
Young people, adrift, unable to share the landscape of their inner lives with grandparents who speak only the language of the past.
Parents, bewildered by the quiet anxieties shadowing children fluent in global trends, but lost for words at the family altar.
An elite class, ascending rapidly — sometimes forgetting the texture of the earth their roots sprang from.

We celebrate breaking glass ceilings, reaching for new heights — yes. It’s necessary, this upward climb. But what if, in our haste, we’re also tearing through those fragile paper walls that once held the messy, vulnerable essence of us together? That once made us undeniably human?

Progress matters profoundly. Growth is essential for survival. But modernity, when it demands the erasure of memory as its price, becomes a hollow victory — a form of profound self-loss.

Surely, there must be a way to surge forward without abandoning the vital poetics of where we came from —
The bittersweet cadence of folk songs carried across generations.
The deep patience learned in stillness and observation.
The ingrained belief that community well-being whispers at least as loudly as individual profit.

To be Vietnamese, here, now, seems to be a constant, precarious balancing act:
To hold a pulsing smartphone in one hand, and a faded, treasured family photo in the other.
To navigate the world in fluent code-switches, and still feel the magnetic tug of home.
To build taller, stronger walls against the storm — but to consciously remember, and perhaps even cherish, what was once held together, however imperfectly, with only paper.
